What is Respite Care?

Respite care is when a regular carer takes a break from caring, and care is provided by someone else, usually on a temporary basis. If you are a carer for someone, understandably it can be a lot of work, commitment and pressure and it’s important to take time for yourself to help prevent you from becoming exhausted and run down.

It’s really important to look after yourself as well as the person you care for, to help you provide the best care and keep your relationship healthy. There are various types of respite care for elderly you can look into to suit your needs.

Day Care Centres

Day care centres are an excellent option for both parties, they provide an opportunity for those who don’t get out and about as much anymore to socialise, make friends and take part in activities – sometimes they put on tea dances, singing, seated exercises, games or crafts and might provide additional care such as hairdressing, foot care and physio.

It’s a great way for the person you care for to socialise and meet others and enjoy a change of scenery and activities in a safe and friendly environment. A visit to a day care centre means as a carer, you can enjoy some free time to relax, run errands or take time for yourself while the person you care for enjoys a day out.

Respite Holidays

Respite holidays provide carers and people with additional needs the opportunity to take a break from everyday life with supported and subsidised holidays. A break from routine can be a good break for you both and offers an opportunity to get out, meet new people and see new sites away from your home.

Paid Home Care Respite

Our respite care offers you a chance to take a break or cover for a usual carer, this could be for a few hours, days or a few weeks depending on your needs. You might need a few hours to get out and run errands or see a friend for a coffee each week, you might want or need to set aside a day or two a week to work, enjoy free time or get chores done or you might be looking at a week or two of cover so you can enjoy a well-deserved holiday.

Emergency Respite Care

Emergency respite care is when you need someone to fill in for caring responsibilities at short notice, such as if you are taken ill yourself or you need to visit another family member who has been taken ill. It could be an unexpected hospital discharge before you have made arrangements or if a regular carer is unwell.

We can provide you with a carer at short notice and will aim to get somebody with you within 24 hours.
